What is a rotator cuff? The rotator cuff is in your shoulder. It is made of four muscles. Together, these four muscles allow you to lift and rotate your arm.
What is a rotator cuff tear?A rotator cuff tear is when you tear one of the muscles in your shoulder that lets you lift and rotate your arm. You could tear just one of the four muscles, or more than one. The tear could also be partial or full. A partial rotator cuff tear means that the muscle did not tear all the way through. A partial tear means that the tendon is only part way torn, and is still attached.
How does a rotator cuff tear happen? The tear can happen suddenly, like when you jerk your arm picking up a heavy object. A rotator cuff tear can also happen gradually over time. Rotator cuff tears that happen over time usually start with the rotator cuff fraying. For more information on work injuries that happen gradually over time, check out our page on repetitive stress injuries.
