Workers' Compensation:

Broken Bones

What types of bones do workers break and how does it happen?

Because our bodies are made up of over 200 bones, both big and small, you can break just about any bone in your body in a work accident.  If you broke a bone in an accident at work, call our workers’ compensation attorneys at 847-352-6226 and we’ll help you with your claim.  Call our workers' compensation attorneys for a free consultation to find out about your claim to get workers’ compensation benefits to pay your medical bills and keep you afloat when you are off work with an injury.

Read on for descriptions of what types of bones workers can break in on-the-job accidents and how these injuries can happen.

A broken bone can mean time off work and hefty medical bills.

Broken arms and legs

Workers can break bones in their arms or legs when they fall from a ladder, fall down a flight of stairs, or fall from a high place.  You could also break an arm or leg getting hit or pulled into heavy machinery or when a heavy box or pallet falls down on you.  Although less usual, breaking an arm or leg can lead to nerve damage or other problems.  More complex broken arms or legs can even require surgery.  The healing process of even a simple break can make you miss many weeks of work.  Give us a call at 847-352-6226 for a free consultation on your claim to get your medical bills paid for and get you money for the time you need to take off work to heal.

Broken facial bones

Workers can break facial bones (like the nose or the bones around the eyes) when something falls on them, if they get hit by machinery, or get into a car crash at work.  An injury to the face can also mean a more serious injury to your head, skull, or brain.  If you were hit in the face or head at work, you should visit the ER to make sure you did not get a concussion or another serious injury.  Our workers’ compensation attorneys can help you with your claim to make sure your medical bills are paid for and you get the money you need while you are off work.

Broken fingers and toes

Broken fingers and toes happen frequently when boxes fall on your feet, you get hit or pinched in heavy equipment, or get slammed in a door or drawer.  Even though these injuries may seem minor, many broken fingers or toes could require a split or cast followed by physical therapy to gain back strength and range of motion.  You shouldn’t have to pay for medical expenses yourself when you break fingers or toes at work.  Talk to our workers’ compensation lawyers at 847-352-6226 for a free consultation on your claim.

Broken ankles, knees, wrists, and elbows

Workers can break the bones in their ankles and knees by slipping and falling, tripping, or stepping wrong off a step or from a vehicle or other equipment.  Workers commonly break their wrists when they try to catch themselves while they are falling.  While less common, workers can break the bones in their elbow by falling and hitting their elbow or when they get hit by equipment or other heavy objects.  Many workers with these types of injuries can’t return to their old jobs while they heal, and some workers may need to switch jobs.  Talk to our workers’ compensation attorneys for a free consultation on your claim.

Broken ribs

Broken ribs are a very common injury.  Workers break ribs when they slip or trip, when they fall down a flight of stairs, when they get hit in the chest by equipment or a heavy object, or when they get into a car accident at work.  A broken rib can be a minor injury, or it can be very serious.  It is important to see a doctor to understand what your broken rib means for you.

Backbones (vertebrae)

Cracking or breaking a bone in your back (the vertebrae) can be a very painful injury, and can lead to nerve damage and pain in your hand, feet, arms and legs.  You can crack your backbones (vertebrae) when you fall from a high place, when something heavy falls on you, when you are in a car accident at work, or when you are hit by heavy machinery.  Sometimes workers get a “compression fracture,” which happens when an accident puts a lot of force on your spine, breaking a backbone.

Hip bones (pelvis)

The hip bones (pelvis) are very strong bones.  Breaking the pelvis is uncommon.  It take a lot of force to break the pelvis, such as falling from a very tall place, getting hit by heavy object or machine, or getting into a car crash at work.  Breaking the pelvis can lead to other severe injuries, and you should see the ER doctor immediately.  Call our workers’ compensation attorneys for a free consultation on your claim to help you get your medical bills paid for and help you get the payments you need to pay your bills while you are off work with a pelvis injury.

I’m not sure, do I really have a broken bone?

You can only find out whether you have a broken bone for sure by seeing a doctor and getting an x-ray, but if you have pain, swelling or other discomfort following a workplace accident, it is possible you broke or cracked a bone.  Call our workers’ compensation attorneys at 847-352-6226 or use the contact form at the bottom of the page for a free consultation on your workers’ compensation claim to help get your medical bills paid for.

A broken bone could be only part of your injury

A broken bone could be your only injury, or it could be one of several different injuries you get during the same accident.  At the same time you break a bone during your workplace accident, you may also suffer cuts, bruises, pulled or torn muscles, nerve damage, or joint damage.  Call our office at 847-352-6226 to talk to us about your injury and how we can help you with your claim.

Should I wait to see if the pain goes away?

If you think you hurt yourself or broke a bone at work, don't wait to see if the pain goes away.  Tell your employer you got hurt, and contact a workers' compensation attorney.  If you do not tell your employer about your injury when it happens, it can be difficult or even impossible to get money for your injuries.

In workers’ compensation, the deadlines can be very fast.  It is best not to wait more than a month to contact a workers' compensation attorney.
