Attorney Bio:

Joey Furlett is Of Counsel at the Law Office of Franklin J. Furlett.  He is also on the list of Adjunct Professors at The UIC School of Law. Joey has worked as an attorney, educational administrator/investigator, and Federal court legal extern.

His practice focuses on Commercial and Residential Real Estate, as well as Internal Investigations. He also advises on business compliance with Federal Civil Rights laws, in conjunction with internal investigations and personnel misconduct.

Joey has had significant transactional experience with complex Residential Real Property transactions and dual-zoned residential-commercial transactions. He also has significant experience negotiating commercial leases and build-out agreements, as well as the analysis of building compliance for commercial businesses and non-profits. He also has significant experience reviewing and helping to negotiate complex tech and software licensing contracts.

Joey has served as remote counsel for transactional and business advisory matters for the Law Office of Franklin J. Furlett while he was appointed as an Educational Administrator in the Hawaii Department of Education. As an Administrator, he performed complex internal misconduct investigations in the largest and fastest-growing school complex in the State of Hawaii. He also acted as the Title VI, VII, and IX subject matter expert for, and advised school administrators on the schools' physical compliance with Title IX Gender Equity laws for the school campuses. He also acted as the administrator for ADA accommodations, and advised on ADA compliance of existing structures.

As a result of his unique background Joey handles a wide variety of complex cases: residential and commercial real estate, commercial leases and build out agreements, commercial contract drafting and negotiations, personal injury, estate plans and trusts, ADA accommodations (and plans) for employers, Title IX (gender equity) compliance analyses for schools, internal civil rights compliance (Title VII) plans for businesses, and corporate laws including incorporation and maintenance of corporate books, transfers of businesses, and asset sales. Joey also gives advice on copyright and trademark laws.

Joey graduated in the top 4% of his class from The John Marshall Law School where he received a full scholarship and stipend.  While at law school, he became an extern to Federal Magistrate Judge Maria Valdez.  There, Joey wrote training and reference guides on federal civil rights laws and state-actor misconduct laws for internal use at the Federal Courts.  He also gained significant experience with complex pre-trial motions, expert disclosures and classifications, and ERISA laws and regulations.

While at The UIC School of Law, Joey was also published in the area of International Trade and Entertainment Law. His article covered CITES regulations in the importation of wood. Through drafting this article, Joey became well-acquainted in the laws regarding agricultural supply chains and international restrictions on trade of natural products.

Joey attended Dartmouth College, an Ivy League institution. While he was an undergraduate student, Joey completed graduate coursework in Optical Mineralogy under Dr. James Aronson. Joey also received the Inaugural Stewart R. Wallace 1941 Memorial Scholarship for his excellence in the geologic sciences.

Joey also spent time teaching secondary English at Maui High School, where he helped craft rubrics, school policies, and guidebooks to support struggling students.

Joey is a member of the Dartmouth Lawyers Association.
